Sculptures

My Process

To see, feel, and appreciate the shapes of things is elemental and essential. Boulders on the beach. Hillsides.  Animal bodies, human bodies, moving or at rest in life. Dreams in the night. Imaginary surfaces evolve over time. Sculpting flows out of and flows back into a sense of form.

Depending on material, scale, required precision, etc, tools vary widely. Tools to support and move heavy objects, light surfaces, measure things, evaluate  curvature, change the shapes of stones. Rocks always get smaller and carving tools do the subtracting. Diamond saws remove material quickly, chipping chisels more slowly but with greater control. Grinding further forms surfaces, then hand-powered sanding for weeks, guided by a feel for form, and sculptures are the result of it.
